SE7EN

This film meets Hollywood thriller expectations as the two detectives are opposites who struggle to establish a positive relationship, these two are opposites as brad pitt is a young white male, who is inexperienced and very messy. However Morgan Freeman is a black male with OCD and an experienced detective. These are two opposite who gain a strong relationship throughout the film. The effect in the opening titles is dark which could represent the personality of the killer. Also the fact the camera is up close to the killer represents how much detail the killer  goes into. This shows how detailed his killings are. Also the music could state where he is religiously as it mentions god and what the killings have to do with religion.

Film Noir

Study of the Film Noir genre

Film Noir, or "Film black" was a genre created by French film critic 'Nino Frank' in 1946. The stereotypical Film Noir consists of usually a private detective who has gone rogue and works for clients that hire or ask him for help. They also have a 'Femme Fatale' or better knows as i damsel in distress, except sometimes, this can have a twist as the protagonist can be lured in like 'a spider lures a fly into its web' as it is commonly associated with. Film Noir's have as minimal lighting as possible and sport a black and white setting which gives the audience the feel of the time of the film it is meant to be set in. Film Noir may be best described as a feeling through the visual of low key lighting and also some visual effects that are due to the low budget nature of these films. They also follow 'Hay's code' which also limits the films.

Film Noir's were extremely popular in the early 19th century as that is when they came into light as they were something different

Blue Velvet

Blue Velvet

The opening scene of 'Blue Velvet' starts with a scene showing dark red roses in front of a white picket fence in front of a lush blue sky. This is notable as it shows the colors of the American flag. In the opening scene of 'Blue Velvet' is seen as a utopia. - there are children crossing the road led by a lollipop lady protecting them from the upcoming cars. There is also a fire engine slowly driving past. All of these add an element of safety to the neighborhood the audience is viewing however, when looked into more clearly, there are several subtle hints into the idea that this neighborhood isn't as perfect as it seems. For example: there is a lot of red. There is red on the schools pupils clothes, the lady's lamp, the fire engine and of course the roses. David Lynch would have purposely implemented these colors into his film to show danger. This is expanded on when a TV show showing a crime drama being watched by the supposed wife of the man watering his plants. This is showing everything is okay but people still watch crime dramas, interested almost in that lifestyle. It could also give a sense of foreboding threat there are darker elements in the film your yet to see.

Blue velvet's opening scene is almost a metaphor of 1950's America - that when everything is fine and happy above, below things are much more real and gritty. This adds a theme of reality and fantasy.

The opening scene is below.

Gross

The 3 genres that come out on top for the year of 2014 was animation, action and comedy. Animation is top most years as it is such a universal category of films. Any age or gender will enjoy a good animation film. Most children will see a animation at the cinema with a adult or a older guardian  This could be parents, grandparents or even teachers with their pupils. They also use synergy a lot as well involving advertisement products with the film like toys, happy meals and trailers on other child friendly films. Action is second on the list. This is because action is an escape for people. You cant do barrel rolls in a car or do backflips while shooting a pistel in slow motion 'in real life'. People go and see action films because they are unable to see what they see in action films anywhere else but on a film. Comedies are usually 15+ and involve adult themes and language making, obviously, more popular with older people. There more entertainment than most other as they provide a story as well as comedy However under 15s also are a target for comedies as they reprisent a sense of childhood and not obeying the rules.

Sci - fi has had 9 releases throughput 2014 and had a total gross of 87.4 million dollars while Horror had 37 releases throughout the year but only produced 57.5 million dollars at the total box office. This could show the sci - fi genre uses quality before quantity while the horror genre uses the opposite of quantity before quality. It may also be because the horror genre is more of an experience than a story driven life work of a director. People do not see horror films often as most are closely relatable to each other making them, after a while, boring however sci-fi films are different universes  different storys, different characters every time.

Preliminary Task.

The Rivalry

The film we made was based on the idea of exchanging an object, which in this case was a 'key card' which was visually exchanged without breaking the 180 rule. We started the film with a close up of the main character which set the scene immediately. We chose the black and white overlay to add an element of class which also fit in with the clothing we were wearing which were suits adding to the effect. We used medium shots to get a better depiction of the idea of the film. This showed an idea of almost Mafia like gangs who are arguing over the possession of the key card which is exchanged in the final scene.
